Sandra Neeley Obituary

Sandra Lee Smith Neeley Beloved Teacher 2/21/1948 – 2/25/2026

Sande was first and foremost a teacher — rightly so, since she was a second-generation member of a family filled with teachers. Once, at the Ellis School in Logan, Utah, she found herself teaching in the same classroom she had attended as a child. It was located just across from her uncle’s classroom and down the hallway from her mother’s.

Sande’s life began in February 1948 in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the hometown of her father, Verne Smith, a World War II–era Air Force veteran. However, the family soon relocated to the city of Logan in picturesque Cache Valley, Utah, the birthplace of her mother, Mildred Ashcroft Smith. There, Sande grew up alongside her younger brother, George Robert (Bob) Smith — yes, you guessed it, another teacher.

In 1970, Sande earned her teaching degree from Utah State University (as did her mother, before).

In 1974, while on summer break from her teaching job in Boise, Sande met and married a USU student, Brad Neeley. In 1975, they welcomed their cherished daughter, Kimberly, while still living in Boise. In 1979, their beloved son, Christopher, completed the family after they relocated to Los Angeles. Sande believed that these two treasured children were her greatest accomplishment—her greatest joy.

Over their 52 years of marriage, Sande moved many times across the country. From one city to the next, she proved her willingness to support Brad as he chased his professional dreams. Somehow, in every single place, she found a way to pursue her own calling as a teacher.

In each new city, Sande was known to her students by a slightly different name. To her third- and fourth- graders in Boise, Idaho, she was Miss Smith. To her sixth-graders in Logan, Utah, she was Mrs. Neeley. As the co-director of a preschool in the Los Angeles suburbs, she was Mrs. Sande. In both Michigan and the Washington, D.C., Virginia suburbs, she was called Miss Sande.

Over her long teaching career, Sande was heralded for her daily story time children’s book readings. She expressively voiced each book’s characters for countless classes of mesmerized, wide-eyed students. For this reason, we know Sande would be honored if, in lieu of flowers, you would consider donating to First Book https://support.firstbook.org/campaign/728395/donate (checkmark the Dedication box).

In 2016, Sande returned to Michigan to be closer to her children. There were yearly trips to Ausable Lake, family holidays spent in Chicago, discovering new Michigan towns and lakeshores, and dining — well, everywhere. Eventually, her limited mobility made these activities too difficult. In her final years, she found great joy and solace from her community of friends she built across the nation. She reveled in the many postings, emails, letters, and cards from former students, parents, family, neighbors, and colleagues — all dear lifelong friends. Thank you all for providing this lifeline.

Loyalty to family. Dedication to work. Boundless love without condition. These are the treasured lessons this family’s teacher gave to Brad, Kim, and Chris. They are eternally grateful to Sande for them.

Sande died peacefully under hospice care at her home in Shelby Township, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her father, Verne Chauncey Smith; her mother, Mildred Ashcroft Smith; and her brother, George Robert (Bob) Smith.

Sande is survived by her husband, Brad Jay Neeley; her daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Michelle Neeley and Steven Craig Cooper; her son and partner, Christopher Derek Neeley and India Es’chien McQuoid.
